Causes of depression can be very varied. The human mind is quite fragile and can be tipped surprisingly easily into different mood swings. There are several causes of depression that are often caused by the mind receiving a deep shock from a traumatic event or sudden lossof a dear one.

Prolonged illness:
If you are experiencing a long and sometimes painful illness it is very easy to fall into a depressive state. Life just seems to spin out of control and you give up hope and become very depressed.
Looking after a loved one who has a painful prolonged illness can also be very depressing. It is especially painful if it is a child or a parent.
Traumatic events:
Sometimes an event or series of traumatic events can trigger Posttraumatic syndrome, which can give rise to depression. Again some of these memories have been suppressed by your mind. This makes it difficult for you to face the events and be able to deal with them. It is very important to get help with these situations. Soldiers coming back from war can experience these problems.
Past childhood trauma:
This can be a tricky one as sometimes the mind will have suppressed this memory and you no longer seem to remember this. This is when regressive therapy and hypnosis can sometimes help.
Loss of dear ones:
The loss of a life time partner, son , or daughter can be very upsetting and depression, can stay with you for a long time and is one of the major causes of depression. If left to fester it can turn into something worse. It is important to be able to talk about it and share your memories of that person with other family members or a close friend. Once you have talked about it, you will find it easier to deal with.
A sad or scary news event:
Sometimes the news can be quite scary and violent. Especially as in modern times no graphic is left out or stone unturned to play on the watcher’s emotions. Sometimes a very sad or violent piece of news can stay in your mind and give rise to depressive feeling.
Diseases like maniac depression:
Maniac depression is a dangerous disease but is now treatable. When you start to experience mood swings, which seem to have no reason, you should try to seek professional help by means of your doctor. A high rate of maniac depressive patients commits suicide, when left untreated. A famous example is the artist Vincent Van Gogh.
Chemical imbalance in the brain:
This is a common reason for what is termed clinical or true depression. In this instance you are not sure of the causes of depression and change of mood.
